Though released only one short year after the series' second game, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood provides a full-featured single-player experience with a staggering amount of gameplay systems, and is sure to please fans of the series with both its story and gameplay. Individually, each part of it may not be incredibly deep, but they all coalesce to effectively enhance the core story, which is a worthy chapter in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Assassin's Creed 2 is probably still a better place for series newcomers to start than Brotherhood, but fans are in for another great and stabby ride.

The Good

Huge, beautiful city stuffed with amazing details Lairs and other platforming sequences are fantastic Long, with lots of fun and varied activities Economy is more meaningful than before All sorts of improvements, big and small.

The Bad

Main story is disappointing Assassin recruitment is contrived and ultimately meaningless Glitches.

There is joy in leaping across the Roman rooftops, taking in the grand sights in front of you and realizing that it is all your own playground. Stealing a combatant's spear from him and impaling him on it is a brutal pleasure. And the little touches--the way Claudia meets Ezio's stare with one of her own, or the fluid animations that characterize your agile maneuvers--are constant reminders of what makes these games so enchanting. This may not be Assassin's Creed III, but like Ezio's smirk, Brotherhood is too irresistible to ignore

At the end of the day, it depends what you’re looking for. If you’re new to Assassin’s Creed, this is a solid entry, but picking up the threads of the convoluted story may be a challenge. If you’re an experienced assassin, on the other hand, expect to tread pretty similar ground to the last title.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter whether Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is a sequel or expansion. I'm not sure even Ubisoft knew which it was while developing it. All that matters is that if you let that ambiguity keep you from playing it, you'll be doing yourself an awfully huge disservice.

Pros:
Strong continuing story; an insane amount of collectibles; greatly improved combat; intense (and fun!) multiplayer.

Cons:
Rome looks a lot like the rest of Italy; multiplayer has a definite learning curve; cliffhanger endings drive me nuts.

It would be easy to dismiss this game as an expansion, but I've never seen an expansion that actually offers players this much more than its predecessor, including the introduction of one of the most promising multiplayer modes to come down the aqueduct in some time.

PROS: Excellent and exciting campaign that introduces worthwhile new gameplay elements; Rome is well built and packed with content; online multiplayer mode is incredibly taut and a smashing addition.

CONS: Leaves a lot of lingering questions unanswered; some texture pop-in issues and occasional odd animations.

Brotherhood is the best showcase yet for the series' formidable quality and range, with an excellent campaign and an equally intriguing online approach, and while I hope the next one actually answers some questions, I can't begrudge Ubisoft in the slightest for giving us one more memorable voyage with Ezio.
